Messi In The Big League
Lionel Messi on Saturday scored his 350th goal in the Spanish league – this in the 2-0 match between Barcelona and Alaves. Mendizorroza saw Barcelona struggling during the initial phase of the match – with both goals only being scored during the second half, and both goals scored by Barcelona lone star Lionel Messi.
Barcelona had to make do without two of its key players on Saturday, including Ousmane Dembele (Neymar’s replacement) as well as injured Luis Suarez. Coach Ernesto Valverde confirmed that it had been everything but easy – especially to be patient and hang in there until the second half. Persistence and determination eventually paid off, culminating in the two goals scored by Messi.
Alaves too, had not had it easy, initially opening with a 1-0 loss at Laganes. The promoted club surprised last year by reaching the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona.
Messi has scored more goals than Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo – 66 more to be exact, putting him well ahead at the top of the all-time list, and is only the second player ever to have surpassed 350 goals in the top five European leagues.
Meanwhile In Barcelona
Barcelona director Ariedo Braida has reacted strongly after rumours of Messi’s plans to leave the club after the expiration of his contract at the end of this season. Fans as well as bookmakers are speculating that Messi could very well be looking to move on next year, to the ranks of none other than Manchester City.
Braida – true to his competitive nature – seemed insulted by the idea of Messi possibly making a change, saying that Barcelona was in Lionel Messi’s heart and that he was a true professional. Whether or not leaving at the end of one’s contract could be deemed unprofessional is completely up in the air for some, however, Messi’s remaining with Barcelona seems a decided matter, at least for Braida.
Whether or not Lionel Messi agrees is another story altogether.
This all on the back of even more rumours – that Neymar, upon joining Barcelona, was promised that the club would in fact be selling Messi so that Neymar could have the opportunity to become Barcelona’s next big thing.
The reports suggest that Messi would be sold to none other than Manchester City, the very club at the center of Messi’s transfer rumours.
Neymar has since made the decision to move to PSG.
