The Racecourse for the Cox Plate
The Cox Plate unfolds at the Moonee Valley Racecourse, which stands around six kilometres out from Melbourne’s CBD. The Manikato Stakes is held the night before the Cox Plate, underneath the lights, and it certainly makes for a special atmosphere for an enjoyable evening out.
The track itself is tight, anti-clockwise racecourse of 1 805 meters, and a short straight of only 173 meters.
The Cox Plate enjoys an excellent international reputation, more so than even the well-known Melbourne Cup. It is the only race in the southern hemisphere to make the Racing World Series list, and the organisers are increasing their efforts to attract international competitors, with more runners coming in from the USA, Asia, and Europe being likely in the years to come.
