AJ Bell PSA Squash World Championships
It’s the ultimate gathering of the best of the world of squash: the AJ Bell PSA World Championships in Manchester, England. This year’s competition will run from December 8th to December 17th and will see 200 of the best squash players from 30 countries around the globe compete for the ultimate title of squash world champion.
The very first men’s squash world championships were held in 1976 and the entire event was played at the old Wembley Stadium, home turf of the English football team. That same year, the women’s championships were also played. These were staged in Brisbane, Australia. 1985 was the very first year that a non-Australian won the women’s squash world championships when Susan Devoy managed to drive the title home.
Since then, the world championships has been hosted by many countries around the world, including Saudi Arabia, England, Hong Kong, Australia and Germany.
Australia again dominated the women’s events for the entirety of the years between 1993 and 2002. The only exception for that period was in 1999, when England’s Cassie Campion managed to make a dent in Australia’s absolute dominance of the competition.
Manchester 2017
This year’s championships will be played in the iconic Manchester and tickets for 3 days of the competition have already been sold out. The competition will be played at the National Squash Centre in Sports City, before moving on to the Manchester Central, where the quarter-finals, semi-finals and ultimately the finals will be battled out.
The expectation is that World No. 1 Gregory Gualtier as well as women’s defending squash world champion Nour El Sherbini will feature in the quarter final matches, as well as Laura Massaro and Nick Matthew (English locals).
World Championships event director Paul Walters has said that he is excited and delighted at the way that the tickets have sold out and are moving fast for the remainder of the days, not just the semi-finals and finals. He also said that fans from Britain were obviously happy about the prospect of seeing the world’s best squash players compete up close and personal. People who had never displayed or experienced an interest in the sport may very well also end up going to see the event, which was a great start to develop a love for squash.
And that really is the point of it all, to instil a love of the game.
