Fresh Young Talent Expected At Youth Sailing World Championships

This year’s Youth Sailing World Championships will see more than 380 up and coming young sailors strut their stuff in a total of 9 events, hoping to eventually follow in the footsteps of the sailing greats.  Many of the Olympic sailing greats started out exactly here: at the Youth Sailing World Championships.

It’s a star-studded affair when considering those who first added their names to the noteworthy list at the sought-after competition: Ben Ainslie (5-time Olympic medallist) and Marit Bouwmeester (2017 Rolex Female World Sailor of the Year) are but two of the names on record.

The Events

Three main events will be hosted at this year’s Youth Sailing World Championships: the 420, 29er and the Nacra 15.

The 420 consists of a boys fleet and a girls fleet.  Both fleets will see some of last year’s competitors making their return and hoping to claim the gold.  In the girl’s division, all eyes will be on last year’s bronze medal winners, Violette Dorange and Camille Orion.  These two sailors will without a doubt be going for gold and silver this year.

As far as the boys’ 420 goes, its Edoardo Ferraro and Francesco Orlando who will be returning to the event and hoping for a podium finish, after having finished in fifth place in last year’s event.

29er

Federico Zampiccoli and Leonardo Chiste will be returning for the 29er division with renewed vigor and hoping for a better finish than last year.

Two brothers from Canada will count among the fresh faces who will be competing for the very first time this year.  They are William Bonin and Sam Bonin.  The brothers may be newcomers to the Youth Sailing World Championships but they are no strangers to sailing or winning, having reigned victorious in every Canadian and North American race that 2017 had to offer.

Nacra 15

The Nacra 15 generally appeals to those young sailors who have a penchant for high-octane events.  Mark Brunsvold and Dylan Heinz will be two of the young sailors to look out for in this event, having recently won silver at the Nacra 15 North American Championships.  They will no doubt be giving it their all for a podium finish at the World Championships too.

This year’s championships will be hosted by Sanya, China, and the sailors will officially take to the waters on December 11th.
