Record Match for Women’s Volleyball Championship Final?

No doubt a select portion of the Australian online sports betting market is devoted to volleyball at the moment, with the Men’s Club World Championship on in Poland until December 17, and the USA’s NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship semi-finals and finals entertaining punters in Kansas City, Missouri.

It’s the culmination of the US women’s college volleyball season, made a little more newsworthy this year by the fact that two of the four remaining teams are also tied on the most championships in the tournament’s history. Fans will be hoping for a showdown that leaves one of them the all-time greatest.

Stanford and Penn State: Seven Titles Apiece

Stanford Cardinal have been a force in US women’s college volleyball for 40 years, winning their first of 20 regular season conference titles in 1977 and taking the NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship seven times to date since 1992.

The Nittany Lions of Penn State started their winning ways a little later, securing their first regular season conference title in 1983 and their first Division I Championship in 1999, but now have 25 regular season titles and seven Division I Championships, leaving the two rivals tied as Division I record holders.

If both teams triumph in Thursday’s semi-finals, fans can expect to see one of them emerge from Saturday’s final the new, undisputed record-holder in the NCAA Division I. But first, of course, they have to win those semis.

Nebraska and Florida Compelling Semis Opponents

Penn State, after finishing the regular season top of the ladder, take on Nebraska in their semi at Kansas City’s Sprint Center. The Huskers, who finished fifth, could prove to be formidable opponents in what’s tipped to be the ‘heavyweight’ semi.

Stanford, third on the regular season ladder, will face the second-placed Florida Gators, underdogs who made the final four for only the fifth time in their history. However, they made a surprising comeback against the dominant USC Trojans to make the semis, so the Cardinal can’t afford to underestimate the Florida side.
