Namibia Prepares For Very First African Nations Championship
A 31 man preliminary training squad has been named to start preparing for the upcoming African Nations Championship. The country? Namibia. For the very first time Namibia will be competing in the African Nations Championship come 2018 and coach Ricardo Mannetti is every bit as excited as the rest of the 31 man training group.
Mannetti confirmed that the Namibian training squad had commenced training at the Namibia Football Associations Technical Centre in Windhoek early on in December. Training is now officially in recess due to the festive season but will commence once more on December 26th when a trimmed down squad of only 28 players will be making their way to Tunisia for a high-intensity training camp in preparation for the tournament.
Tunisia is a central training point and four other teams from other African countries will follow suit. This provides the ideal opportunity to be playing a number of friendly matches against other countries, something that will prove very valuable for a team like Namibia who have never competed in the African Nations Championship before.
The final squad of 23 will be announced on January 11th. The African Nations Championship commences on January 13th and will conclude on February 4th.
Local To Head Up Libyan African Nations Campaign
Meanwhile, the Libya Football Federation has declared its full support for local coach Omar Al-Maryami who will be training the Libyan team after a deal with Egyptian coach Hany Ramzy fell through the carpet.
It is the common understanding that the deal went south as a result of a failure to agree on the terms of the contract of Ramzy’s employment by the Libyan team. The Federation was reportedly only able to offer a 6 month deal, which wasn’t good enough for Ramzy who had hoped on a longer contract. Ramzy’s argument was that it would take much longer than six months to get the team to where he wanted them to be under his tutelage.
The offer has since been extended to Omar Al-Maryami, who has happily accepted and will be accompanying the Libyan team to Morocco as well as being the man in charge of the Libyan African Nations Championship campaign.
Libya were recently unbeaten in a stint of three games drawn when they competed in Kenya. Shortly after they sealed the deal with victory over Zanzibar.
Libya have been grouped together with Equatorial Guinea, Rwanda and Nigeria.
