Sports Administrator Believes AIS Needs Restructuring

May 18, 2018 by

Peter Conde, the director of AIS, has stated that the current format of the AIS needs to be adjusted in order to keep up with the change in Australian sports. He says the AIS will employ a smaller number of staff, move to a small site, and that the focus of the AIS will shift to producing world-class administrators and coaches, as well as pursuing new and upcoming sporting technologies.

This was in a response from Conde to a number of current and former administrators, and he has remained adamant that the only way to move forward is by harbouring serious change in the AIS.

“That is not about going back to what worked 20 years ago,” Conde has told reporters. “What’s important here is through the system, we have effective daily training environments with a great high-performance culture, great coaches working with the athletes and sport science teams. We are not in a situation where all that needs to be in one place in Canberra.”

“Our responsibility now is to get above all of that and establish genuine leadership and collaboration. We need to unite and enable the national high-performance system and work on the frontiers of human sporting performance where others aren’t positioned to do that,” he added.

His plans for the future of the AIS includes extensive revamp work done on the institute itself, as well as a number of job cuts and eventually the sell-off of the 64ha Canberra site.
