The Kenyan women’s volleyball team has been forced to push back their departure date due to a lack of funds. The team was set to head off to Japan for the Women’s World Championship, but their departure times have unexpectedly been extended.
The team was eager to leave for Japan, as an intense 10-training course awaited them, allowing them to polish up their skills and test out their strengths. The championships, which are set to take place across six cities in Japan from the end of September to the end of October, will include 24 teams from across the world.
The 24 teams, which have been grouped into four separate pools of four teams, will be battling each other for a place in the top four team spot, which means automatic qualification for the World Cup next year.
President Waihaka Kioni, president of the Kenya Volleyball Federation, told reporters that it was not their fault that the delay occurred, and that they were forced to wait for government support before getting the funds they needed, and will be leaving via Ethiopia.
The Kenyan team has been pooled into Group D, and will be facing off against Kazakhstan in their first match before moving on to Serbia. Other teams in the pool are Brazil, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rica. One the top two teams from the group will be able to progress to the Main Cup quarterfinals.
