Semi finalist from last year, Michael Unterbuchner managed to survive a scare to go on to beat Justin Thompson 3-2 and moved on to the second round. The German was under constant pressure despite winning the first leg of the match with a 100 checkout, and managed to finish with a 101 and 102, although it wasn’t enough to see him win in the fourth set.
Thompson forced a decider through drawing level for a second time after impressing during the preliminary rounds, where he had emerged victorious, maintaining his winning streak throughout until he was faced with some heavier scoring from the favourite. Unterbuchner maintained his own nerve and left the game with a 15-dart leg, although he may have to better his average of 90.13 when he comes face to face with Wayne Warren for the quarter-final round.
He was also part of Chris Hammer’s pre-tournament plan, along with Jim Williams, who survived a much bigger scare to win 3-2. The Welshman, who seeded three, beat Belgium’s Roger Janssen with an average of 92.26.
Any Hamilton dream of launching his career during his Lakeside debut ended early when he lost to Canadian David Cameron in a surprisingly one-sided match that saw Cameron finish with a 3-0 victory in their preliminary round match. The former PDC World Champion runner up, who had previously lost to Adrian Lewis in the 2012 final, reached the last eight a year.
