Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club’s Australian goalkeeper Mat Ryan will be donating AU$28 000 to Wires Wildlife Rescue in response to the bushfire crisis in his native country. He pledged AU$500 for each save made in last weekend’s Premier League and a total of 56 were made, five of which Ryan was responsible for himself, the joint-second most. He accomplished this in his team’s game against Everton F.C., one which Brighton unfortunately lost.
Ryan is one of several Australian sports stars doing their bit to help the cause, including Ashleigh Barty, Nick Kyrgios, and Shane Warne.
Kasper Schmeichel, goalkeeper for Leicester City, made the most saves of the weekend with seven, with Aston Villa’s Orjan Nyland, Burnley’s Nick Pope, and Tottenham Hotspur’s Paulo Gazzaniga being responsible for five saves each, like Ryan.
Ryan took to Instagram recently to say that he would be making this donation, saying that it was his effort to combat the devastation caused in his home country by the terrible fires. He thanked his supporters for all their work up to now while he was at it, and expressed his gratitude to everyone for their generosity in advance. He spoke of homes having been lost, the lives of animals and people being taken and put in peril, and the negative effect business and entire communities were trying to survive. He said that he is aware of the donations already pouring in and that he hopes that everyone can continue the good work in raising money for those who have been affected by the disaster.
