Football boss Dan Richardson has been sacked.
Announced by Essendon on Thursday, Richardson’s sacking is officially the first casualty resulting from a formal club review carried out by Essendon President Paul Brasher.
Richardson’s sacking came only a day ahead of the start of the new AFL free agency season – a period predicted to get underway off the back of a move by Joe Daniher to the British and Irish Lions.
As for the now-departed Richardson, he was cherry-picked by the club at the end of 2017 – with his signing back then considered the direct result of a successful period spent heading up Richmond’s football department. The former Bombers coach also played a leading role in the procuring of coach Ben Rutten and assistant coach Blake Caracella – both at the time poached from the Tigers.
A statement issued by Essendon chief executive Xavier Campbell however refers to Richardson as a “good football person” and a person recognised to have played a deciding role in attracting a number of top football talents to the club. The decision to refrain from offering Richardson a new contract, explained Campbell, followed long and ongoing discussions on the direction the club now wishes to head in in terms of actual performance on the field.
Club President Paul Brasher as recently as a fortnight ago minced no words preparing members of the board on the possibility of a major shake-up in Essendon’s leadership ranks. Brasher vowed to be brutally honest in his review and resulting future decisions.
