Chelsea Dominant Force To Be Reckoned With

Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon saw Chelsea bagging their second English Premiership League win a row, after thrashing Everton 2-0 in what many have described as being a comfortable and effortless triumph.

Chelsea head coach Antonio Conte was disappointed in his league of champions after having had received a whipping at home by Burnley on – worst of all – the opening Saturday of the season.  However Chelsea soon recovered, as they always do, defeating Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley the following week, effectively kick-starting their EPL season.

Ronald Koeman’s side didn’t take the thrashing lying down – not by any means.  They tried to unsettle Chelsea from their comfort zone up until the last minutes of the match.  So much so that a final desperate effort to salvage honour, if not the match, Wayne Rooney scuffed a shot and ended up in a clash with Fabregas – earning him an annoying yellow card.

Everton did manage to apply some last minute pressure but it was sadly a matter of too little too late.  Tougher challenges certainly lay ahead for Chelsea, but beating Everton certainly goes a long way towards a great start.

Disappointing Final Stretch For Rooney

Meanwhile in retirement-land, the Chelsea defeat coupled with the yellow card are sure to be part of a disappointing build-up to the final stretch of former English captain Wayne Rooney’s career.   Rooney announced his retirement from professional football mid-week before the Chelsea-Everton clash.

The Everton forward has been plagued by injury since EURO 2004, never quite recovering completely since.  Rooney first struggled with an injury sustained in the 2004 quarter-final against Portugal – followed by multiple injuries ahead of both the 2006 as well as the 2010 World Cups.

Rooney’s upcoming retirement marks a new dawn for English football – with England’s striking power being anything but perfect, or even refined, at the moment.  Rooney isn’t exactly surplus material and England will be facing some major shifts and even changes if the hope is to return to any form of former glory.

England may have the likes of Kane, Wellbeck and Sturridge in their camp, but these striking options are certainly not good enough going into the World Cup.  On the other hand, Rooney had not featured on the national side since November 2016.  England is missing a striker, and that striker would not have been Rooney even if the tables had been turned.
