Colombia Wins Gold At Hosted Games

August 6, 2018 by

Colombia beat Venezuela 2-1 and went on to earn men’s football gold for the Central American and Caribbean Games, which took place in Barranquilla.

The country, which has been hosting the Central Games, secured their victory over their rivals during the 12th minute of the match after Jean Gutierrez Abreu scored the first goal of the first half. A converted free kick by Leonardo Fabio Casto Loaiza grabbed the second point not long after the start of the second half.

The 35th minute was when Venezuela managed to earn their first goal, thanks to Yahandry Orozco who scored on a rebound. The point wasn’t enough to find an equalizer for the team, however, and Colombia held on strong until the end whistle blew. They also faced further misery after substitute Ronaldo Chacon was dismissed due him barging into Colombian goalkeeper Kevin Mier Robies with just five minutes remaining in the game.

It is the second time in the Central American and Caribbean Games that Venezuela has finished second in the men’s football competition. Their first time saw them lose 4-1 against Mexico in the final played at Veracruz.

Colombia, on the other hand, are celebrating their newly acquired gold medal, which is their third gold in men’s football following victories in 1946 and 2006.

Honduras was the bronze medal winner for the latest games, beating out Haiti 3-0, with more matches set to continue soon, and ultimately concluding in the beginning of August.
