Vikings Walk All Over Redskins

Minnesota Vikings On a Winning Streak

The race for the NFC North title is on and the Minnesota Vikings are well on their way towards claiming it.  Especially after their latest 38-30 victory over the Washington Redskins.  The Vikings are now on an overall advantage of 7-2 and on a five game winning streak.

It was all in the running and passing for the Vikings on Sunday, with the offense being a given a steady boost by the overall quality of play.  In fact, the offense dominated against the Redskins.  The same side that had effectively broken the offense of the Seattle Seahawks only a week ago.

It wasn’t always like this for the Vikings, not for the current season in anyway.  Week 4 saw a disappointing and in many ways unnecessary loss against the Detroit Lions, setting the Vikings on a very neutral 2-2 path.  The future looked bleak and uncertain and not much seemed to be clear going forward.  It’s now six weeks later five straight games later and things are starting to look on the up and up.

Victory doesn’t only mean steady headway towards the NFC North title but also progress towards becoming a top seed in the NFC play-offs.

If credit were to fall where credit is due, the name of one man must be mentioned: Mackensie Alexander.

No Longer A Rookie

2016 wasn’t the best of years for rookie Mackensie Alexander.  The cornerback did not see much of the field as far as defense goes and when he did, he didn’t exactly make the best of it either.  2017 however, is a different story altogether.  It’s starting to become evident why Vikings opted him in once more in the 2016 NFL Draft.

Most notable probably was the touchdown drive in the second quarter that effectively put the Vikings in the lead at 21-17.  The Redskins’ offense sat upright and paid attention, their answer to the problem in the way of quarterback Kirk Cousins tossing a pass that sailed right over the head of the receiving target and into the very interceptive arms of Mackensie Alexander.

The interception not only gave the Vikings great field position on Washington’s 23-yard line, but also led to yet another touchdown, boosting their lead by 11 points.  Alexander’s interception was key in taking the wind out of the sails of the Redskins’ offense at a time when it really mattered.

Two tackles and two pass deflections against Washington sweetened the deal even further for Alexander.  Hopefully Sunday’s performance will become a new standard for the cornerback.

The Vikings are no doubt counting on it going forward.
