WSL Aussies Hopefuls Want to Win
The numbers speak for themselves: three of the remaining five hopefuls set to compete in this year’s world surfing WSL championship are from Australia. Tyler Wright, Sally Fitzgibbons and Stephanie Gilmore can each still win the women’s world surfing crown in Maui, Hawaii come end November.
The favourites to claim the title are defending champion Tyler Wright and Sally Fitzgibbons. Stephanie Gilmore, six-time world surfing champion, may also still walk away the ultimate victor.
Two American surfers are also in the running for the title, the only other ones still able to claim the crown. Courtney Conlogue and three-time world champion Carissa Moore.
The Maths Of The Matter
Tyler Wright is the defending champion, after having secured her debut world title in 2016. She currently leads as far as the rankings are concerned. The overall tour leader, however, is Sally Fitzgibbons. In the event that Fitzgibbons or Wright finish third and Conlogue for some reason doesn’t make it into the finals, then Wright will have successfully defended her world title. Wright will also have achieved success in doing this if Fitzgibbons and Wright were to finish in fifth place and neither Gilmore or Conlogue win the event.
Fitzgibbons has only made the final at Maui once in four attempts. Speaking to the press Fitzgibbons said that the fact that the competition was so close, prompted her to constantly bring her A-game to the table.
Moore has made the Maui event twice and has made the past three finals and as such has the best record ahead of Hawaii.
Good Things To Come
Yet another Australian is making surfing history. At only 15 years of age Aussie Caroline Marks will officially be the only rookie to compete in next year’s WSL championship events. Marks is the youngest ever male or female surfer to qualify for the world surfing tour.
Marks was officially named this week as one of seventeen elite female surfers to have qualified for the world class event in 2018. She has accumulated more record-breaking titles than any other surfer her age over the last six years, including two back-to-back Pro Junior WSL titles.
Her long-time coach, CT Taylor, is as elated as Marks about the future, saying that it has been a pleasure to watch her student grow and that as long as she continued to take the big waves head on, great things were expected for the future.
