Ashton Will Try For Fourth World Title
2017 was a big year for Lisa Ashton. In fact, it was a great year, especially after her winning a third British Darts Organisation World title. It was Ashton’s third title in four years, after having raced to 3-0 sets victory over Australia’s Corrine Hammond. Ashton is an absolute activist for the game of darts and especially for the involvement of women in the sport, and as such she was absolutely delighted at having the opportunity of taking the trophy home to Bolton for the third time.
Now, one year later, Ashton prepares to defend her crown once more as we head into 2018 and ready ourselves for yet another BDO World Darts Championship. 2018’s tournament will again be staged at the Lakeside Country Club at Frimley Green and will run from January 6th to January 14th.
Ashton: Women Should Be Allowed To Play Men’s Division
It’s been a big year for women in sport, and Australia has been at the forefront of pushing the agenda of the promotion of women’s sport. We saw this in the Women’s Big Bash League as well as when the ABS Sports Personality of the Year award was handed to Sam Kerr, a phenomenal woman in sport.
It’s a matter that is very near the heart of BDO World Darts Championship titleholder Lisa Ashton. Ashton is outspoken about the inequalities imposed on women playing professional sports and has said in no uncertain terms that she believed that women who play professional darts would never be pitted against their male counterparts as the men would be petrified that the women would beat them at their own game.
Still, Ashton believes that women should be allowed to play in the top men’s competitions, especially since the prize money on the go in those competitions were so much more lucrative than in the men’s divisions.
Ashton also believes that the standard upheld in the women’s divisions are every bit as good as those displayed in the men’s competitions. She said that it wasn’t about class because really, there was only one. The difference was all in the pay scale.
It’s quite revealing when you consider that the women play for a total prize pool of $12,000 whilst the men get to take home their share of a $300,000 pie.
Ashton will this year be trying for a fourth world title at the BDO Darts Championship and has said that her goal was to get as close to Trina Gulliver’s record of ten world titles as possible.
