Payne Haas of the Brisbane Broncos will in all likelihood be suspended by the NRL after his drunken lashing out at police officers in a Tweed Heads incident in January. Haas reportedly also faces a fine of at least $20,000 over the mishap.
The Broncos forward on Thursday pleaded guilty as charged to a count of attempting to intimidate a police officer after the court heard how he had directed a verbal stream of filthy abuse towards officers on duty. Haas reportedly also wanted to know from a female police officer whether she had been looking at him in a strange way because she assumed he would not “touch” a woman.
According to a prominent news broadcaster, the NRL is currently concluding its internal integrity investigation into the complaints received about the NSW Origin forward and is expected to hand down its verdict sometime next week.
NRL Chief Executive Andre Abdo has responded to questions from the media by saying that there was no excuse for the way in which Haas had conducted himself, and that he would definitely be facing “sanctions”. Abdo said no excuses would be made for individuals making themselves guilty of police-abuse.
But Haas is no stranger to internal NRL punishment of the harshest variety. He previously got grilled by the league after he failed to co-operate with the NRL Integrity Unit during its investigation into an incident at a football game that involved the star forward’s family.
The former Kangaroos star has in the meantime apologised to the police officers in question.
