Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz says he feels like he deserved to crash in the final practice round of the Dutch Grand Prix. His car was badly damaged after he spun off course at Turn 3.
While Sainz, after joining Qualifying 1 at a delayed pace eventually did manage to qualify behind teammate Charles Leclerc, says he initially had no idea as to how or why the crash occurred, he later realised that he had in fact been at least 20 centimetres off the normal line immediately prior to the incident.
Zandvoort is clearly no forgiver of errors, said Sainz following the incident. This was also stressed all the more by mistakes made by Nicholas Latifi and George Russell during their own qualifying rounds. Sainz said even with the accident considered, he still respected Zandvoort as a circuit – and that he deserved to crash given the circumstances.
The clearly relieved Ferrari driver added that until the point he was actually able to drive his pit-stopped car back out of the repair zone in Q1, he wasn’t at all sure whether it would be ready in good time.
Max Verstappen, meanwhile, laid a heavy burden on rival Lewis Hamilton as he headed into his first-ever home GP qualifying session while leading the way by half a second during the final practice round.
Verstappen, who drives for Red Bull, put up a best lap time of an impressive 1:09:623 – half a second faster than Valtteri Botas, and a further two-tenths of a second speedier than main rival Lewis Hamilton.
