Hamilton A Furious Figure At Turkish GP

October 13, 2021 by

While F1’s Lewis Hamilton was never going to have an easy time at the Turkish Grand Prix following the 10-place penalty for the fitting of a new engine, his fifth-place finish on Sunday clearly didn’t sit well with the Brit.

Hamilton’s objective right from the start had been to minimise any potential loss of points to rival Max Verstappen. But exactly the opposite happened in Istanbul following a failed pit strategy by Mercedes. The result was Verstappen finishing in second place vs. Hamilton’s fifth after the team insisted he pit from the number 3 position against his better judgement.

His frustration became glaringly clear when he had no more than a short and blunt response for race engineer Peter Bonnington, with whom he’s known to share a close relationship. When passed info about the gap between himself and sixth place, the British race car driver reportedly responded with a cool and curt, “leave it alone”.

Hamilton after the race hinted strongly at the possibility of the call potentially costing him his eighth world title. And while team principal Toto Wolff would later concede that the team may have made a mistake by not bringing Hamilton in earlier for a chance of tyres, he defended strategist James Vowles’ decision to play it safe for avoiding a complete tyre fail.

But despite Hamilton’s reaction on Sunday, he knows the importance of working together in harmony with the rest of the team if he’s to win any title in the future. And for that, he may be willing to concede something of his own.
