Irish Steve Lennon came close to extending his stay at the DC World Championship into round three only to fall short after a final set tie break in a thrilling game played at the Alexandra Palace. Now that Lennon Is out, England’s Alan Norris will be facing Simon Whitelock’s conqueror, Ryan Joyce for the upcoming round after claiming a 3-2 win.
The 25-year-old Carlow native was 2-1 and 1-0 ahead in sets, and had two darts to close off the match in the eighth leg of the decider, only to let Norris back into the game. Having been able to win the advantage of throwing first for the sudden death leg, a combination of both a maximum from Norris and an unfortunate bounce from the treble 20 gave Norris the checkout opportunity of 81. The Englishman made zero mistakes, and took double 12 to put an end to Lennon’s time at the event.
It was the first loss in what had otherwise been a good tournament for the Irish players, with Daryl Gurney, William O’Connor, and Brendan Dolan moving on to the third round. Earlier, Holland player Jermain Wattimena had managed to overcome some initial issues on his doubles during a game that saw him earn a 3-0 over English Michael Barnard. The Dutch player will now be facing two-time world champion Gary Anderson for the third round of this year’s event, which will be taking place over the next few days of Christmas and New Year’s.
