Daniel Ricciardo has apologised for his reproachable behaviour prompted by the repeated playing of a video showing a crash incident for promotional purposes. The F1 star used what he described as aggressive language by calling Formula 1 “idiots” for their continuous use of the footage.
Ricciardo during an interview said he considered the sport’s brand managers way too eager to use accident material – this after F1 had repeatedly shown footage of Romain Grosjean’s fiery crash near the end of the 2020 racing season. According to the star Aussie motorsports racer, the sport should instead of focusing on crash material, rather focus on actual “highlights”. He added that he thought nearly eight out of ten top-10 moments used by F1 last year had been accident and crash-related footage and video content. Content like this is typically used for advertising purposes on social media.
Speaking during the run-up to the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, the Australian said although he stands by his stance on the matter, he concedes that a different choice of words should have been used. He said he’d even take what he had said back if he could have.
Ricciardo added that he thought last year’s F1 season had been an amazing year for the sport, its drivers, and its many fans. He said that owing to the many amazing races and podium finishes, he’d certainly not describe 2020 as having been a boring year on the track in any way.
He however added that his comment had been prompted by exactly the fact that there’d been no shortage of real great moments.
