Aussie Daniel Ricciardo Not One For Eating Dust

Australian Daniel Ricciardo has once again proven his ability to compete against the big guns over the weekend of July 14 to 16 at Silverstone.  Ricciardo, competing for Team Red Bull, had started as far back as 19^th place – after a 15 place grid penalty – but finished the race in 5^th place after a performance that was nothing short of exceptional.  This was sure to have even surprised Red Bull team-mate Max Verstappen, who finished 4^th.

The Aussie made it clear that he wasn’t satisfied to merely scrape the bottom of the barrel of the Top Ten positions – and displayed an uncanny ability to make masterful judgement calls when overtaking.

Verstappen too, fought hard for 4^th place – battling it out with Sebastian Vettel most of the way and going wheel to wheel with the German by driving hard and smarting it out around the bends.  There was no doubt in anyone’s mind as to who the crowd was rooting for.

Hamilton To Remain Big Boy At Mercedes – For Now

Vettel ended up being the talk of the town for more reasons than one over the weekend, as rumours of him being courted by Mercedes spread like wild fire through camp Silverstone.   Hamilton did nothing to aid the extinction of those fires by failing to pitch up at the Formula 1 demonstration event – a move classified by many as having been a show of unhappiness.

The old adage “methinks he doth protest too much” rang true as far as Executive Director of Team Mercedes, Toto Wolff’s, reaction went concerning Hamilton’s absence from the event.  He was quoted as saying that the rumours were rubbish stories relating to relationship problems between Hamilton and Team Mercedes, as well as between Wolff and Hamilton.

Even Christian Horner has stated that he believed that Wolff and Vettel had indeed been talking business.

Hamilton responded to the rumours in the one way that he knew best – by winning the race flawlessly and topping it all off with a crowd surf when he was done.  Hamilton led the entire race with virtually no challenges to speak of.  Teammate Valtteri Bottas finished in second place.

That Hamilton did manage to put the wind up Bottas and Raikkonen in a ghastly way as he delayed the post-race press conference with his crowd-surfing antics – would be putting it mildly.

In the words of another Wolfe – you (truly) can never go home again.
