Formula 1’s FIA has now been accused outright of having put entertainment ahead of the rules at last year’s controversial Abu Dhabi season finale.
Aston Martin drivers Lance Stroll and Sebastian Vettel this week accused Formula 1 and the FIA of particularly poor judgement in the decision that led to Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton lose out on a record 8th World Title.
Hamilton lost the championship to Red Bull’s Max Verstappen after race director Michael Masi made a controversial decision regarding the safety car and lapped cars.
According to Vettel and Stroll, who spoke during the launch of Aston Martin’s new AMR22 car, the objective of ensuring an entertaining and certainly dramatic outcome to the 2021 season had been put well before the integrity of F1 as a sport. Rules are rules, said Stroll, and those rules include the use of the safety car.
Vettel agreed with his teammate, and said that to his mind, Formula 1 had lost all sober perspective. He however expressed sympathy with the juggling act performed by Australian Michael Masi in trying to ensure a race completed under official racing conditions.
The FIA is due to reveal the outcome of its investigation into the highly debated season finish on Monday, Feb. 14.
Aston Martin now have a five-year plan in place for tuning the team into a challenging squad for winning races and hopefully also titles. They’ve made major investments as well a complete reshuffle in terms of management to achieve this goal.
