F1 Team Williams Admits To Design Failure

July 16, 2018 by

Williams, a Formula 1 team participating in this year’s British Grand Prix at Silverstone has admitted that a failed design led to the catastrophic aerodynamic stalls that their cars suffered in the Grand Prix.

The failure came after Williams attempted to install a new rear wing into their car, but it didn’t take long for the flaw to make itself known to drivers Lance Stroll and Sergery Sirotkin after they found themselves falling behind their competitors on the track.

The phenomenon has been identified as having been caused by a stall in the aerodynamics at the diffuser, specifically once the DRS opened and shut. Paddy Lowe, the Chief technical officer for Williams has stated that the issue was intermittent, but was enough to cause a catastrophic problem for the drivers and the team.

Lowe also told reporters that it’s the extreme loss of downforce meant that using the cars was unsafe, and that the team would consider driving without DRS in the future, but that it wouldn’t allow them to keep up with their rivals.

Despite all the problems they’ve faced, Lowe has said that there was a possibility that they would retain the new wing on their cars, stating that he doesn’t believe there is anything wrong with the wing at a fundamental level. The failure saw both Stroll and Sirotkin having to stay in the pit lane during the race, where they lost both time and their positions.
