Hanoi Set To Host First F1 Grand Prix In Vietnamese

November 5, 2018 by

Vietnam has recently announced that it will host the first Vietnamese Formula One Grand Prix for April of 2020, becoming the third southeast Asian country to host the event.

The event will take place in the Vietnamese capital of Hanoi, and officials in the city are looking forward to having a racing event as prestigious as the F1 within their city as the F1 franchise looks to expand into new regions.

The circuit is et to be revealed by the Hanoi People’s Committee during a gala. The idea of hosting the F1 was originally presented earlier in the year by authorities, but they also explained that it would not be funded by the Vietnamese government. Despite this, head of government office Mai Tien Dung has said that they would help to fund the event due to its potential for advertising revenues.

The event was initially expected to be held on one of the more scenic routes that span Hoan Kiem lake, but they had instead opted to make use of the wider roads surrounding the national stadium. F1 director Charlie Whitting has confirmed that he’s visited the site, and is confident that it will be ready within the next few years.

F1 has, in the past, been seen as a risky venture, especially within countries where the sport isn’t as nationally popular, such as Malaysia, who were forced to cancel their F1 events due to the low turnout of spectators.
