Lewis Hamilton has earned his sixth world drivers title after finishing in second place at the United States Grand Prix. He has become the second most successful F1 driver in history, and is currently one championship behind legend Michael Schumacher. Hamilton had failed in his attempt to win the race by trying a new strategy with Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas, but a win wouldn’t have matter due to his points advantage going into the event.
The British driver had held off Max Verstappen for second place while Bottas took first in Austin. Hamilton had stated before the beginning of the race that he had not been thinking of sealing the championship title in Texas, and was more focussed on winning the race. The driver’s strategy was to run long, hold off his rivals, and only stop for a single pit didn’t work out in his favour as Bottas eventually managed to get past him with three laps to go.
Hamilton’s latest title has also pushed him clear of Argentine Juan Manuel Fangio. Talking to reporters, Hamilton said that it was overwhelming, and that it had been such a tough race. He added that he wanted to recover and deliver the one-two, and didn’t think that the one stop was going to be possible. Hamilton has secured the title with a total of 10 wins from 19 races so far this season, and will be taking part in the final two in Brazil and Abu Dhabi.
