Lewis Hamilton, driving for Mercedes, has won the 2018 Hungarian Grand Prix, and in doing so has increased his championship lead by 24 points, pushing him closer to a fifth world title.
Hamilton’s victory saw him cross the finish line 17.123 seconds ahead of long-time rival and Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel. Vettel was met with misfortune at Budapest after he collided with second Mercedes driver, Valtteri Bottas. The accident took place on lap 65 of the 70-lap race, just as Vettel had overtaken Bottas, clipping the Finn’s right wing, as he was moving past, and pushing Bottas out of the race. Bottas ultimately finished in fifth place, behind Daniel Ricciardo.
In third place came Kimi Raikkonen, driving for Ferrari, who claimed his fifth podium finish in a row. Next was Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo, who managed to jump from 12th place at the start to 4th place by the finish.
Hamilton was ecstatic with his victory, and it marked the 6th time that the driver had won at Hungary, the 5th time of the season so far, and 67th in his career so far.
Hamilton told reporters that they had arrived at the Hungarian GP knowing that Ferrari would be there biggest competition. But that the team is happy with the points they earned during the race. The total score for Hamilton now sits at 213, followed by Vettel’s 189, which is the culmination of 12 of 21 races this season, just before the start of the summer break.
