Hamilton returned from his summer break after winning three consecutive races to gain a 50-point lead on his main rival, Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel. The two drivers were neck-in-neck for most of the beginning races of the season, but Hamilton has since pushed ahead, and is making a beeline to win his fifth World Championship title.
The British racer recently made his way to Japan to prepare for the Japanese Grand Prix, which is set to take place as Suzuka. He’s also told reporters that he’s not sure why Ferrari has battled so much this season, but believes the upcoming race in Japan will be a close one.
Hamilton stated that they were not expecting the Ferrari team to be as fast as they were in their last race, and that him and Mercedes won because their car worked extremely well. He added that they’re not yet sure of how much they’ve improved compared to their rivals, and their Suzuka race will reveal where exactly the two teams stand.
Hamilton and teammate Valtteri Bottas made short work of the Russian Grand Prix, where Bottas gave up his lead and took on the role of defence to allow Hamilton to take first place. Their confidence has remained unbroken as they enter the Japanese arena, and Hamilton believes that both engine performance and car stability is improving, and that the car is the best is has ever been – which may put an end to Vettel’s dreams of a fifth title of his own.
