Lewis Hamilton, five time F1 champion, has earned his 11th win of the 2018 season by taking first place for Mercedes at the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
The Briton, who started the race from the 83rd pole position, claimed victory 2.5 seconds ahead of his main rival and four-time champion, Sebastian Vettel, who drives for Ferrari. It was a race that started out with a terrible opening lap collision that saw Nico Hulkenberg’s Renault reduced to a ball of fire after he barrel-rolled into the barriers. Hulkenberg fortunately walked away from the crash unscathed.
Max Verstappen finished behind Vettel in third place for Red Bull just ahead of fellow teammate Daniel Ricciardo, marking it as the 150th race Verstappen has driven for Red Bull, and the 150th of his career. Behind Ricciardo came Valtteri Bottas, driving from Mercedes.
Sixth place belonged to Renault’s Carlos Saize, who was followed by Charles Leclerc of Sauber. Force India’s Sergio Perez came next ahead of Romain Grosjean, who had been involved in Hulkenberg’s crash early into the race.
Two-time champion Fernando Alonso finished in 11th place for McLaren for his 311th race of his career, and his final F1 appearance. Hamilton’s 11th win is another notch in the belt for the 33-year-old, who has dominated most of the season. He told reporters after the match that he was happy to win, and believes that his rival Vettel will be coming back next year stronger than ever.
