Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton has extended his current lead to 67 points ahead of his closest competitor, pushing himself further to his fifth world title for this year’s F1 world championships.
The Brit only needs another 8 points to claim the title, and could potentially win it all during the United States Grand Prix, as long as he takes the win in Austin, and Sebastian Vettel’s stays in third place or lower. Vettel’s luck on the track has been on a decline, and his latest race saw him come in at sixth place after a collision with Red Bull driver Max Verstappen.
Vettel, who started eighth on the grid due to a series of driver and team errors, fought hard at the start of the race, and managed to move up four places. Just eight circuits in, Vettel encountered disaster after attempting an unrealistic and dangerous move on Verstappen as he slowed down suddenly on the Spoon curve.
Under braking, Vettel collided into the side of Verstappen, and spun out of control. Although he wasn’t seriously injured, his hopes for a world championship title all but ended after the collision. This is just the latest mistake as the German racer becomes more erratic and desperate, as his campaign has fallen apart.
After the first ten rounds, Vettel had taken the lead by 10 points, but within the space of seven races, Hamilton has gained a massive 75 over his main rival, and it would take a miracle to beat him.
