Lewis Hamilton claimed his latest victory after winning the Russian Grand Prix, a race that saw Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc over a safety care. It marks Hamilton’s first win in four grand prix events, pushing him closer to his sixth world title. Ferrari saw their chances at victory fall apart after a controversial move from Sebastian Vettel where he ignored team orders. The pre-race plan for the team was for Leclerc to tow Vettel down into the first corner in order to remove the risk of Hamilton, who had started second.
Leclerc has stuck with the plan, but once Vettel had gained the lead, he refused a demand to let his teammate past him again. After a number of conversations on the radio, Ferrari had decided to do the swap later, and Leclerc was given the chance to recover first place after he pitted four laps earlier, and allowed to benefit from new tyres. But Vettel’s engine began to develop problems on his first lap out of the pits, and the team was forced to deploy their safety car. It proved to be bad timing for the team, as Hamilton was able to quickly take over the lead.
Leclerc then lost second place when George Russell crashed with a braking problem, with Ferrari once again deciding to pit Leclerc, swapping his tyres. The move dropped hi behind Valtteri Bottas, and was not able to get close enough to get past Bottas for the rest of the event.
