Red Bull Ready For Engine Penalties

September 26, 2018 by

Red Bull is currently the only Renault-powered team on the roster to give the new Spec C power unit a try this season. But despite it giving Max Verstappen the extra power he needed to claim second place in the Singapore Grand Prix, the team will be changing back to the Spec B for the Russian Grand Prix.

Red Bull first tried Spec C at Monza, but it was in Singapore where Verstappen was forced to deal with the numerous issues of the more powerful engine, including a number of drive-ability problems. Verstappen still managed to get second place, but commented after that he would have a real shot at taking first if there weren’t engine mishaps during the race.

The issues with Spec C have pushed Red Bull to put the experiment on hold, for the time being at least. Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo’s cars will be fitted with fresh Spec B units – which will see them face a few grid penalties before they can run in the Russian event.

Red Bull team boss Christian Horner told reporters that they believe Sochi is going to be a tough weekend for the team. He explained that they accepted the risks when they decided t use the Spec C engine, and while it provided more power, it was rough around the edges. He continued by saying that their mechanics have done a good job tidying up on the mapping within their parameters, but with they could have used more time.
