Charles Leclerc has continued Ferrari’s impressive stats at the pre-season testing while Pierre Gasly has crashed his Red Bull during the penultimate day of testing. Leclerc managed to claim the fastest time of the day by over half a second before Gasly damaged his vehicle at Turn Nine, making this his second crash so far this winter.
Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas has stated that Ferrari are ahead of the other teams, noting that they are looking strong, and that they need to unlock more for their new package in order to be able to compete with leading team.
Mercedes have been struggling consistently to get their new car to behave in pre-season testing, but Bottas believes that they have made progress with an aerodynamic upgrade that was introduced for the last few days of testing.
Ferrari has had its own share of problems, with Leclerc doing much of his driving while dealing with a problem in the cooling system, and the team suffered another blow after Sebastian Vettel crashed due to what Ferrari has claimed was a wheel failure. Leclerc was ultimately forced to end the day by stopping on track due to an exhaust problem. Pre-season testing times are a famously unreliable indicator of home as it’s impossible to know the specifications in which each team runs their car, which includes fuel loads, engine mods, and other aspects that can make huge differences to their performances, which gets changed significantly before the season starts.
