Promoters of next year’s Russian Grand Prix have stated that they are confident that the event will go ahead as planned, despite the country receiving a four-year ban from all major international sporting events. The ban was imposed by the World Anti-Doping Agency following a doping scandal among top Russian athletes and officials. The ban means that the Russian flag and their anthem will not allowed to be shown or played at events such as the upcoming Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics, along with the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The Russian Grand Prix for the 2020 season is due to take place at the end of September in Sochi. Promoters Rosgonki has said that it would be technically and legally impossible to change the date of the event. They added that the contract for the Russian round of the Formula 1 World Championship had been initially signed as far back as 2010, 9 years before the recent events that led to the country’s ban, and that the contract is set to only expire in 2025.
A spokesman from Formula 1 had confirmed that their plans coincide with the Russian promoters, adding that they will continue to monitor the situation and see if there will be an appeal and what the ultimate outcome will be. The FIA, the governing body of Formula 1, is recognised by the International Olympic Committee, and is classified as a code signatory according to WADA.
