The F1 Has Been Asked Not To Change Pit-Stop Procedures

April 13, 2018 by

With the Chinese F1 Grand Prix looming on the horizon, many begun to decry the recent potential plans to change how pit-stop procedures work.

Charlie Whiting, sport race director of the F1 confirmed that the governing body of the F1 are looking into the issues that have been associated some of the incorrect wheel fittings that plagued the previous Grand Prix events. This is due to a number of stoppages that occurred throughout the previous season, especially during the opening two rounds. Haas and Ferrari were just some of the teams that the stoppages caused problems for, and the reason that many at the F1 have decided to review the current pit-stop procedures.

During last season, Ferrari accrued a total of 55000 Euros in fines due to their “unsafe releases” from the pit, of which the second caused mechanic Francesco Cigarini to sustain a broken leg.

Haas Chief Guenther Steiner has been one of the few to view the possible changes as a negative to the overall sport, despite the Haas team being hit hard by the stoppages. Steiner has said that an element of danger makes F1 what it is, and then it’s not something that needs changing: “For us, it didn’t make it interesting, but it gives another element of risk in the race.” He goes on to say, “if you make everything 100% safe, why do we watch F1 racing? That’s my opinion, we need to have it where a human being can make a mistake.”
