The Russian Grand Prix is almost underway, marking the 16th round of the F1 championship so far in the season, and the last chance for Sebastian Vettel to claim a win or risk losing the title challenge.
Although Vettel was expected to do better in Singapore and Italy, two mistakes in each of the races – one due to a car mishap, the other his own fault – saw him fall behind his biggest rival, Lewis Hamilton, by a total of 40 points.
The German race desperately needs a win under his name, or even a DNF for his main rival. There will still be 125 points remaining after the Russian GP, but at the moment it seems highly unlikely that Hamilton is going to lose his current lead. Even if he completed each one of the next five races as a runner-up, he would still claim the title. Vettel would need to win all the rest of the races in the current season if he wants to take the title for himself.
The bad news for Vettel, however, is that Sochi is famously known as a track that has been dominated by Mercedes in the past, having been technically undefeated at Sochi since 1913.
But Vettel is now stranger to the Russian course, and during last season he was outpaced by Valtteri Bottas by 0.6s, so there’s no doubt the German racer is aiming to claim his revenge, especially after a hard season so far.
