Williams Extend Engine Deal

September 18, 2019 by

Williams has confirmed that they will use the Mercedes engines in Formula 1 racing until at least 2025. The team, who are already partnered with Mercedes for the next season, have signed a new deal for another five years. Williams has seen a decline in their performance since they finished third in both 2014 and 2015, which were their first two seasons with Mercedes after turbo hybrid engines came into the competition.

They finished in last place in 2018, and are on course for another last place for this year, but they are hoping that a restructure of their technical department will allow them to see better luck in the future. Claire Williams, deputy team principal for the team, told reporters that Mercedes has been one of the most successful engine supplies for the sport, and that she believes that they will continue to have competitive engine packages going forward.

A new set of rules has been announced for 2021, which are focussed on making the grid more competitive. A budget cap has already been agreed upon, while new technical rules that allow for closer racing are still being finalised as teams and bosses move to agree on a more beneficial revenue split. The poor performance on the track has hit the team had financially, and they recently posted a loss of 16.8 million pounds for the first six months of the year, which they attributed to reduced prize money along with loss of sponsorship.
