Victor Mete Permitted To Join National Selection Camp
The Montreal Canadiens have announced that nineteen year old defenseman Victor Mete will be permitted to join the selection camp for Team Canada ahead of the 2018 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships.
The four day selection camp will be hosted by the Meridian Centre in St. Catherines and is the annual selection camp where the players to represent Canada at the World Junior Ice Hockey Championships are evaluated and chosen. From the group attending the selection camp, a total of 22 players will ultimately be selected to represent their country at the championships. Those players are then afforded the honours of sporting the national colours in New York come December 26th to January 5th
Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin made the announcement, saying that the decision had been made to allow Mete to join the camp as it would be beneficial to his development as a player. He went on to say that the World Junior Hockey Championships selection camp was a very elite and competitive environment, and that this could be of exceptional value and professionally very rewarding to a young player like Mete.
Hockey Canada on December 6th revealed a list of 32 players made up of 4 goalies, 18 forwards and 10 defensemen who had been invited to join the selection camp. Mete was selected for the camp last year as well, but fell out early due to an early cut. Last year, Canada went on to finish second to America, earning the country silver.
Despite having been an early cut, Mete did manage to collect four assists and rack up a plus-5 differential. Mete also finished 100th overall in the 2016 NHL entry draft.
Other Juniors On Loan
Victor Mete is one of six eligible junior players to have been identified this year and the first to have been released for the selection camp. The other eligible juniors are Arizona defenseman Jakob Chychrun, Philadelphia centre Nolan Patrick, Colorado Avalanche defenseman Samuel Girard, Columbus centre Pierre-Luc Dubois, and Colorado Avalanche centre Tyson Jost.
Canada has until December 19th to add more NHL players to the roster for the World Junior Championships.
Mete is the favourite as far as eligible selections go this year, having played 27 games for the Canadiens and having averaged a total ice time of 14:52 per game played. Mete certainly is a young player worthy of further development.
