The Final day of the Group Stage proved to be anything but boring. Going into day six, fourteen out of the final sixteen playoff teams had already been decided. There were just two places left and it all came down two epic matches. Firstly, we saw Red Bull Salzburg host Grizzlys Wolfsburg in Group A. The winner was automatically going to qualify while the loser would end their Champions League campaign there and then.
Day 6 Action Recap
In this case it was Red Bull Salzburg who put on a bit of a late show but managed to pip their opponents and make it through to the playoffs. The second decider match that we were all waiting for was the ZSC Lions Zurich versus KAC Klagenfurt in Group H with ZSC Lions Zurich hosting the match. Again, it was a case of the winner advances while the loser heads home. In a somewhat similar scene as the first match, the home team emerged victorious. The ZSC Lions Zurich were able to join the Frölunda Indians as the top two team in Group H and the next stage of the competition.
Meanwhile, both KalPa Kuopio and the Stavanger Oilers had a point to prove despite finishing at the bottom end of group B. Heading into what was to be their final Champions Hockey League Game, KalPa wanted at least one more win to finish on a high. They started off with a good win but then followed it up with three successive losses. Their opponents on day 6, the Stavanger Oilers lost four games by just a single point, wanted to go out with at least one championship point on the board. Unfortunately, it was not to be for the Oilers who succumbed to might of KalPa for the second time.
