The opening game for the Hockey World Cup saw seen the Manpreet Singh-led squad dominate their South African opponents for most of the game, and finishing with a clean 5-0 victory in their first Pool C encounter that took place in Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar.
The team controlled the match for all four quarters of the game, with Mandeep Singh taking the first score in the 10th minute of the first quarter. Akashdeep Singh scored the second goal for the Indian team during the 12th minute of the same quarter. South Africa were unable to keep up while the Indian team managed another 3 goals by the end of the game.
Their success was thanks to the offensive mindset that had been put into play by coach Harendra Singh before the start of the tournament, and it showed as the Indian players rarely let the ball out of their position. By the end of the first half of the match they had gained a 2-0 lead thanks to their possession. They missed a few other chances to score in the third quarter, but they quickly rectified this in the next.
India continued their domination as they moved into the final quarter, taking back-to-back goals in the 43rd and 45th minutes of the match. The team boasted strong attack, plenty of defence, and controlled the game throughout. India is now set to take on Belgium in their next group stage match.
