Rachael Lynch, the Australian field hockey goalkeeper with dreams of winning an Olympic Gold Medal at this year’s games, has traded in her gumshields, gloves, and shinliners for blood pressure cuffs, stethoscopes, and thermometers. The coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic has ended any chance of Lynch competing for a medal in Tokyo this year, so she is putting her skills as a registered nurse to work instead.
When the Games of the XXXII Olympiad, or Tokyo 2020, were postponed to July 2021, Lynch applied to work as a nurse at two clinics dedicated to treating those with COVID-19 in Perth. She was already working one day a week in a ward dedicated to neurorehabilitation as part of her work-life balance as an elite athlete but did not have any scheduled shifts lately. This is because the Hockeyroos were supposed to be in Europe in preparation for this year’s Games already.
The 33-year old reported that, in light of the postponement, she went in to see her boss, knowing that the medical field is desperate for skilled workers to deal with the feared onslaught of cases likely coming soon. She feels that she can now dedicate herself to working as a nurse full-time since her schedule has so suddenly been freed up.
Lynch has previously spoken of her frustration at seeing images of beachgoers in various parts of Australia, frolicking on the shore as if nothing is happening and her sadness at people putting themselves in harm’s way because they are not taking the global pandemic seriously enough.
