The Most Memorable Moments from the Winter Classic
From the overtime goal that Miller provided for the Rangers, to the frozen fun for KISS fans the New York Rangers are still perfect as far as outdoor games are concerned.
The Rangers improved to a total of 4 – 0 – 0 all time in outdoor games with a 3 – 2 OT win against the Buffalo Sabres in the 2018 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic at Citi Field last Monday. These are the most memorable moments from that game.
Miller Managed to Win It
J.T. Miller, forward for the Rangers, said that the feeling was hard to describe, and stated that he suspected he might have blacked out -but he will never forget the goal. He scored a power-play goal off of a rebound from the slot 2 minutes and 43 seconds into overtime, giving the Rangers the victory.
The shot from the point was taken by Kevin Shattenkirk, and Miller got a piece. It hit off of Robin Lehner, goalie for the Sabres, and dropped to Miller’s on his backhand, where he then shovelled it into the net.
Miller celebrated at once, with the crowd roaring. He was joined by the rest of his team, who poured in off the bench, over the boards, in order to take part in the mayhem that ensued. After a postgame handshake line, which is customary at games which take place outdoors, the Rangers headed over to the centre of the ice and gave a stick salute to the more than 40 000 fans who had turned out.
The Spine-Tingling Moment of KISS’ New York Groove
Boo Nieves, center for the Rangers, wrote about how thrilling this moment was in the last of his Winter Classic blog entries for NHL.com.
The teams each emerged from their dugouts, with Ace Frehley, the former lead guitarist and founding member for KISS, performing New York Groove in a Rangers sweater. The players, lead by Henrik Lundqvist, goalie for the Rangers, and Robin Lehner for the Sabres, made it to the step leading up onto the stage/ice, stopping as Frehley’s song was finished.
The Anthem and the Flyover
After the players had lined up, the Every Voice Choirs, based in New York City, made up of a group of children born in 2008, the year of the inaugural NHL Winter Classic performed The Star-Spangled Banner.
As the song was sung, Challenger the Bald Eagle took flight across Citi Field, and, as the song came to an end, four F-15 aircrafts were flown over the centre-field scoreboard and across the stadium.
