The plot is probably as thick as its ever going to get for Ben Simmons and the Philadelphia 76ers. This after Simmons got suspended for a single game due to his refusal to participate in the final part of a team training session earlier this week.
After practising with the Sixers on Monday as well as Tuesday, Simmons got booted from training by coach Doc Rivers for being “a distraction”. Rivers said Simmons’ booting was no big deal and was the result of a refusal on his part to do what everybody else was doing as a team. Rivers also said the team simply went on with the practice session following Simmons’ departure.
But according to inside sources, Simmons hasn’t appeared at all interested in engaging with the rest of the team ever since returning after his big hold-out.
76ers All-Star center Joel Embiid seemed anything but impressed with Simmons on Tuesday. He said that while he wasn’t being paid to “babysit” any of his teammates, least of all Simmons, he couldn’t really be bothered with anything Simmons does or refuses to do.
Rivers, too, appeared an apathetic figure in response to Simmons’ attitude towards the team. He said Simmons remained under contract with the Sixers, and that this wasn’t a matter for debate or something that would change anytime soon. He said he’d be fine whether or not Simmons ultimately decided to join back in.
Simmons played a forgettable and average performance in the Playoffs.
