Anthony Griffin is great choice to be coaching the dragons for the next two years – especially since he could potentially build a similar junior model to the development model he helped build during his time with the Panthers. So says New Zealand rugby legend Andrew Johns of his endorsement of the newest Dragons appointment.
There’s no need for new Red V appointee Anthony Griffin to fear his reputation falling in any way short of those of the majority of top NRL coaches currently in the game. He is after all the man being largely credited with having helped push a youngsters-driven Panthers team all the way to the top of the NRL ladder. And exactly this, says Johns, is what leads him to believe that Griffin will prove the perfect fit to a defence-lacking Dragons squad.
And fans too, are bound to discover themselves ultimately happy with Griffin’s youth-focused approach. An unwillingness to focus on young blood was after all most Dragons fans’ main beef with former coach Paul McGregor.
Anthony Griffin boasts an impressive 55% win percentage across the 173 games he’s spent coaching in the NRL so far. And even more impressive is the fact that in the seven years he’s spent coaching in the NRL, he’s only ever missed the finals a single time.
Griffin has said he already has a basic outline in his mind of how he plans to rebuild the club. And it’s a rebuild that will largely be taking place from within.
