Brisbane Broncos coach Anthony Siebold has finally decided to step down.
Siebold will this week address the Broncos for the very last time, effectively drawing a line at the bottom of a very tempestuous tenure that managed to last not even half of a 5-year NRL coaching contract.
Brisbane and Siebold’s own management team are reportedly currently hashing out the final details of a severance payment, which payment will represent a termination effective immediately, and which payment will free Siebold up to go his own way.
Siebold’s stepping-down announcement followed only days after his two-week bio-bubble “hold” expired; this after he previously left the bubble in order to attend to an urgent family matter. Siebold’s immediate exit means he won’t be supporting his players during the end-of-week game between the Broncos and the Roosters. The current expectation is that assistant coach Peter Gentle will take over where Siebold has left off and that he will remain in this position until the end of the year. A new coach will reportedly be named sometime next year, with Paul Green and Kevin Walters both previously cited as possible favourites for the job.
Siebold’s time coaching Brisbane before too much time had passed became marked for its crazy ups and even crazier downs – on-field as well as away from it. He’s had to weather ongoing negative critique regarding the performances of his team, and even at one point became the subject of several vile rumours spread online. So defacing were said rumours that he’s had to seek legal aid.
Siebold is officially the fifth NRL coach to have stepped down this year.
