AU Divided Over Fake Crowd Noises at NRL Games

May 29, 2020 by

The National Rugby League became the first professional sports competition in this country to resume when the Brisbane Broncos and Parramatta Eels faced off at Suncorp Stadium on Thursday night. This is the first top-level game of any code to take place since the novel coronavirus COVID-19 lockdown measures began in late March.

But, in the wake of the pandemic, there were no fans inside the stadium. Virtual crowd noises were broadcasted instead and social media posts by fans ranged from comparisons to Milli Vanilli to complete satisfaction.

The NRL restarted three weeks earlier than the rest of our domestic competitions. The Australian Football League is readying to get back on the field on the 11th of June and the jury for the A-League’s return is still out. Although eyebrows were raised early last month when Australian Rugby League Commission Chair Peter V’Landys said the NRL would be back on by now, he’s been proven right.

The competition got the go-ahead to return by New South Wales, Queensland, and Victoria state officials on the 1st of May but have to follow stringent protocols regarding social distancing. Players are also to be regularly tested for COVID-19. Additionally, influenza vaccinations are a prerequisite and anyone refusing to get one needs to get a doctor to give them a medical exemption.

The NRL season has been revised and will feature 20 rounds instead of the standard 25 and each match will be held at one of six venues. These are the Suncorp, Bankwest, Campbelltown, Gosford’s Central Coast, and Queensland Country Bank Stadiums and the AAMI Park.
