What happens in Port Macquarie, stays in Port Macquarie (apparently). Former Canterbury players Jayden Okunbor and Corey Harawira-Naera have proved successful in their appeal lodged against their sacking from the NRL. The two got scrapped by the NRL earlier this year following an investigation into their unprofessional behaviour during a February Bulldogs preseason trip to Port Macquarie. The pair were found to be in gross violation of the league’s code of conduct for having invited two high school girls (of consensual age) to their rooms at the hotel the team was staying at.
The league however this week announced that instead of complete deregistration, its committee for appeals had ruled that Okunbor be banned for a total of 14 matches, and Harawira-Naera for 10. League acting chief executive Andrew Abdo however minced no words in pointing out that the appeals committee viewed the violations in a very serious light, even despite the decision not to completely deregister the pair. Abdo said that the NRL,
though disappointed at the “lightness” of the outcome, respected the committee’s decision not to scrap the pair altogether. It’s at this stage not yet clear whether the players will be reinstated at their former club, namely the Bulldogs. The bans are understood to apply in such a way that they will be backdated all the way back to round 1, which could potentially mean a return to play in round 11.
Harawira-Naera has only been with the club since last season, having moved over from Penrith. He has since put in 21 appearances for the Bulldogs, along with a total of 5 tries scored. He is 24. Okunbor, 23, only made his NRL debut last season and has since registration scored 5 tries during 10 appearances.
