Aurie’s Star Handicap Day: A Portal To Greatness
The month of August comprises the last days of winter – a welcome gateway to the paradise that is Spring. It also plays host to the Aurie’s Star Handicap Day, a Group 3 race held annually at Flemington Raceway in Melbourne – ever since 1996. The Aurie’s Star Handicap Day is – as the name suggests – run under handicap conditions, and entries are open to all horses.
Being the first Group race of Spring, the Aurie’s Star Handicap Day is commonly a portal in its own right – with horses going on to compete in the Sydney and Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. Those who perform well at the Aurie’s Star are bound to feature prominently at races such as the Waterford Mile and the Emirates Stakes. A prime example of this tendency is Mic Mac, who went on to reign victorious in the 2009 Memsie Stakes, after coming first in that year’s Aurie’s Star.
Flemington presents a 1200m straight course – and as such the Aurie’s Star Handicap is well suited for horses who prefer straight running over having to navigate around turns and bends.
Recent winners include Sooboog, Shiraz and Tiger Tees.
Lankan Rupee Notably Absent From 2017 Aurie’s Handicap
All-round favourite Lankan Rupee will not be running in this year’s Aurie’s Star Handicap Day. Trainer Mick Price has confirmed that the sprinter was enjoying a break as a result of having been plagued by injuries, and that the 1200m handicap would not be suitable for Rupee as far as weight was concerned.
Rupee will however be aiming for a place – perhaps even a win – in the PB Lawrence Stakes, set to take place on August 19, and after that, it’s on towards Memsie.
I Am A Star Looking To Dazzle At Aurie’s
Trainer Shane Nichols is yet to commit to specific race-dates, but has announced that he felt confident that I Am A Star would be competing for the $150,000 prize money at Flemington on August 12.
I Am A Star has won 6 of her 15 starts.
Hey Doc Presumably Fit And Ready Ahead Of Aurie’s
Trainer Tony McEvoy plans to get Hey Doc off to a smashing Spring season at the Aurie’s Handicap Day. McEvoy was quoted as saying that Hey Doc had enjoyed having a little time to himself during a three-week absence from the racing arena, but that he was very pleased to be returning to Flemington.
The Australian Guineas winner will presumably also be heading for Memsie after running at Flemington on August 12.
