World champion Marc Marquez has won the ninth race of the MotoGP season after taking first place at the Malaysian MotoGP. Valentino Rossi was the strong favourite to win the event at Kuala Lumpur, but a crash just four laps to the finish saw Rossi losing his place in the race.
Marquez claimed his fifth world title in Japan with just three races left in the season, but by the start of the race in Malaysia, it almost seemed certain that Marquez would need to settle for second place. This was because of the early performance put on by seven-time world champion Rossi, who had built up a lead of seven tenths and had out-lapped pole-sitter Johann Zarco. But Rossi’s lead came short when he lost control of his bike while taking turn one.
Marquez had started out at sixth place on the grid despite having earned top times during the qualifying rounds, which came as a result of his impeding of Andrea of Iannone of Suzuki. Marquez took the event safely before securing his 44th win in the top class of MotoGP racing.
His win, which came in at 40 minutes 32 seconds, also meant a place for Honda at the constructors’ championship for the fourth year in a row with one round of the season left. In an interview after the race, Marquez told reporters that he started the race by pushing hard, but decided later to cool down and just finish the race.
