Melbourne Spring Carnival Awaits

Excitement At A Gallop Ahead Of Melbourne Spring Carnival

The Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival is Australia’s annual premier thoroughbred horse racing series, and includes major races such as the Memsie Stakes – made up of races such as the HD McNeil Stakes and The Heath 1100.  The Carnival – and especially the Melbourne Cup – attracts the interest of those not generally interested in horse racing as a rule as it is a great opportunity to engage in some low-level sports betting, even for those not usually in the know.

Numerous Group 1 races take place during the months of August and September, but the Melbourne Spring Carnival officially kicks off one week after the Australian Football League Grand Final.

The Memsie Stakes

The first Group 1 race of the season, the Memsie Stakes, will be raced at Caulfield on Saturday, 2 September.  The cream of Australia’s thoroughbreds will be battling it out this year – including Jon Snow, Hey Doc, Le Romain and Bonneval.

What’s more, with no AFL matches taking place on September 2nd, all AFL Club members will be welcomed to Memsie for free on presentation of their membership cards on race day.

HD McNeil Stakes – August 26

The HD McNeil Stakes is a Group 3 race for 3 year old thoroughbreds.  It is run at Caulfield Racecourse, and over a distance of 1200 metres.

This year will see Ciaron Maher trained Merchant Navy returning to Caulfield to compete in the HD McNeil Stakes, having won all of his career starts to date, including the prestigious Listed Anzac Day Stakes.

The Caulfield Guineas will most likely be Merchant Navy’s focus race for the Spring.

Cockram Stakes – August 26

A 1200 metre Group 3 race for mares four years and older, this year’s Cockram Stakes will be run on August 26 at Caulfield Racecourse in Melbourne.  The race was named in honour of Victorian breeder W.W. Cockram and has been hosted by Caulfield Racecourse since 2002.  The Cockram Stakes is often used in preparation for major Melbourne Spring Carnival races – and is the first annual group event of the season for mares only.

The Heath 1100 Stakes – August 26

The Heath 1100 Stakes is a Group 3 thoroughbred open horse race, raced under set weight conditions, with penalties.  Only horses 4 years old and older are permitted to compete, and the race takes place at Caulfield Racecourse.

As the name suggests, the race is run over a distance of 1100 metres.
